The Lasell men’s volleyball team isn’t just winning matches this season, it’s redefining expectations.
At 10-4, the Lasers have put together one of their strongest starts in recent years, highlighted by a statement sweep over nationally ranked No. 6 Messiah.
The victory wasn’t just another mark in the win column; it was a moment that signaled this team may be ready to compete at a higher level.

“For us, that was the defining moment,” said sophomore opposite hitter Ryan Tierney. “When we defeated No. 6-ranked Messiah, it showed what we’re capable of.” That confidence isn’t accidental. According to Tierney, the biggest difference this year has been a shift in standards.
“We have higher goals than previous years and hold each other to them every day,” he said. The mindset change appears to be spreading throughout the roster.
Outside hitter Matthew Mitko described the team’s identity as “level-headed, fun, and confident,” a combination that has translated to consistent performances on the court.
Mitko also pointed to leadership, both from teammates and coaches, as a major factor in the team’s growth.
“It helps us focus and push each other on the court,” he said. That next level may be closer than it once seemed.
Sweeping a top-six program like Messiah doesn’t happen by accident.
It requires discipline, execution, and belief, all traits this team appears to be building week by week.
But the players insist they aren’t satisfied. “The goal is to be a national competitor and compete at that level,” Tierney said.
With a 10-4 record, a signature-ranked win, and a roster buying into higher expectations, men’s volleyball is no longer just building for the future; it’s positioning itself as a legitimate contender right now.
If the early season is any indication, the Lakers’ biggest matches may still be ahead.
