As the semester wraps up at Lasell, students are planning their classes for next semester. As academic plans for each major are rolled out, it leaves questions about what else the school could be offering to its student body. There are plenty of majors that the school could add to its repertoire, and I wanted to highlight a few and the benefits Lasell would receive by adding them to its course catalog.
Nursing – This seems like an obvious choice for the school to add, considering it is one of the most popular majors across universities in America and used to exist at the school. Lasell also has the advantage of being just a ten-minute walk away from Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a teaching hospital, and only fifteen minutes away from one of the best cities in the world for medical care.
It seems like a waste of resources not to include a nursing major in a time when people are flocking to the career choice. Understandably, nursing is a relatively expensive major to run, but I think it would work out in the end for Lasell. With a popular major like this added, Lasell would most likely increase its enrollment and gain popularity–and therefore funding–in the community.
English and History – As an education major, I am well aware that these two are technically a major here, but you have to pair them with a secondary education degree. Students should be able to major in English or history without having to pair it with an education track. Lasell is technically a liberal arts school, so shouldn’t there be more liberal arts majors open to students?
There are so many career paths that can emerge from an English or history degree, and the school should create an easier path to those. Limiting English and history to an education-only major most likely turns people away from the subjects. Including a basic English or history major would usher in a new crowd of humanities students and would definitely amount to a strong program.
Computer Science – This is a more controversial major addition in an ever-changing technological world, but adding a computer science major could be a positive change at the school. This major would pair well with currently offered programs such as cybersecurity, data analytics, or even graphic design.
As a school that strives to be so technologically forward, it is surprising that a computer science program does not exist here. Adding this program would be a great way to propel the school into even more technological advancements.
Despite the school not offering these programs, there is, thankfully, a way to customize a major. In their freshman year, students can propose and apply for a major that is not offered at the school by explaining why they want to partake in the unique program, a list of proposed course requirements, an explanation for each course, and a plan for the sequence of courses. This is certainly more work than just entering into a pre-made and decided major program, but it is hopeful to know the school does want students to follow their passions during their four years here.
Lasell should be open to shaking up their course catalog and consider adding more programs. Popular additions will lead to more enrollment and create a strong reputation for the school.
