Billy Uberti, Lasell’s six-year head coach, has left Lasell to join Emerson College as head coach of its baseball program. The baseball team is now hiring a new coach, and his name is Matt Sammarco. Sammarco has been named the interim head coach for the baseball team, effective immediately. Sammarco is not new to this coaching staff; he has been a part of the team for the past 5 years and even previously played for Lasell.
During his time as a player, Sammarco was awarded All-Conference Second Team honors as a senior, where he led the team in batting average at .337, an on-base percentage of .416, and 33 hits.
While his playing days are over, he will still look to set some historic records as a head coach. Sammarco also has prior clubhouse experience with the Houston Astros, Tri-City ValleyCats, and even a role in the Futures League. With the season right around the corner, he has the complex job of putting a great product on the field. Although the Lasers went 25-16 last season and made an appearance in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs, the Lasers look to make that next step.
Alex Munz, a sophomore pitcher, says he is a “players’ coach” and “Won’t ask us to do anything he wouldn’t do himself.” Some players who have X-factor potential ahead of the season include: pitcher Matthew Dinoff, sophomore pitcher Michael Webber, junior pitcher Jeremy Wacker, and senior catcher Matthew Williams.
Wacker even said the team has a “Chip on our shoulder.” He explained how the team has the same “Outline, but putting our own spin onto it,” and that the Lasers are still looking to succeed this season amid this head coach change.
The GNAC finals will always be the goal. This team, along with Sammarco and his playing experience, will look to make some serious noise. Leading this team means a lot to Sammarco, and it is clear that the athletes are ready to compete with him at the helm.
