The Lasell University field hockey team has entered the Greater Northeast Athletic Conference playoffs with high hopes. The Lasers enter the playoffs with an 8-8 record overall and a 6-4 record in the GNAC.
Senior walk-on goalie McKenna Ecker has been holding down the net with a .770 save percentage and only a 2.77 goals against average.
Ecker said, “Out of conference games were tough, but only prepared us for GNAC playoffs by giving us these challenging games, so by the time our long stretch of GNAC games came around, we were prepared.”
Brooklyn Northcutt, a junior on the team, has helped them get to this spot with 13 goals through the 15 games she’s played.
She scored three of those on Sept. 3 vs. Framingham State, where the Lasers won, 7-4.
The middle of the season was shaky for the Lasers, losing six in a row in September, four of which were nonleague games.
The last of that stretch was against Colby-Sawyer on Sept. 24 on Grellier Field. The Lasers lost a close game, 4-3.
The field hockey team took that personally. The team showed up and showed off, winning the next four games, all of which were conference games.
Lasell has shown that it has resilience.
The Lasers are closing out their season on a three-game winning streak, highlighted by a 5-0 victory over Albertus Magnus on Senior Night, a 3-1 road win at UMass Dartmouth, and a 2-1 triumph at Saint Joseph’s (Conn.)
With momentum on their side, they are ready to face New England College and make a statement in the postseason.
Sophomore Megan Crabtree says, “We lost to NEC last year and this year in regulation. We have something to prove with this upcoming game.”
Crabtree has been stellar, with the 2nd-most goals on the team —6, tied with Mara Boldy.
The Lasers head into the GNAC playoffs with confidence, built on a strong finish to the season and standout performances from key players.
