“We are going to break a lot of school records along the way this year,” said head coach Andrew Chabon, confidently setting bold expectations for the Lasell University track and field program as it begins the new season.
The team enters the competition with a fresh look, adding four new coaches to support Chabon. The move marks a major shift from last year, when the program had only three coaches in total—and just one full-time. Chabon, who served as interim head coach last year, now officially leads both the men’s and women’s squads. With a strengthened staff, he says the difference is already clear. “Having to refill an entire staff is never ideal, but I think the experience they bring will be valuable to this program as a whole,” said Chabon. “I already feel a massive load off my shoulders. These coaches are so supportive, and they’re very familiar with me as well.”
The new staff includes Assistant Coach Dave Tousignant, who brings 24 years of high school and college coaching experience. He will oversee the throwers. Assistant coach Sean Duncan, A UMass Amherst graduate with 15 years of experience, will coach the distance runners. Assistant coach Jacob Brown, a recent UMass Amherst graduate and former Division I decathlete, will focus on the jumpers. Volunteer assistant coach John Blake, Chabon’s cousin and Ithaca College’s 3k steeplechase record-holder, will assist with the distance program. With three UMass Amherst alumni on staff, the group combines shared history with a wide range of expertise.
Chabon emphasized the strong connections within the staff: “Jacob is one of my closest friends—I’ve worked with him for six or seven years now, very closely. Sean, I’ve known for several years. John, I’ve known my whole life, being my cousin. Dave, I haven’t known him as long, but he will be a huge help.” For Brown, this role represents his first step into coaching. “It’s my real first coaching opportunity, and I’m so excited to see what you guys can do,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone and getting into the program.”
Chabon’s goals for the season include placing at least third in the GNAC conference, breaking multiple school records, and qualifying athletes for the NCAA Division 3 New England Championships. The first indoor track meet will be on December 6th at Suffolk University. With renewed energy, expanded expertise, and a coaching staff that feels like family, the Lasell track and field team looks poised for success.
