“The Pitt” swept the Emmys this year with an astounding five wins, including Outstanding Drama Series, and I can definitely see why. There are so many medical shows out there right now, it can be hard to say which ones should be at the top of your watch list, so I am going to give you three reasons why “The Pitt” should be No. 1.
This 15-episode show is all told during one day. Shockingly, it is told during a 15-hour shift in the Emergency Department in the middle of Pittsburgh. The lack of time cuts allows the viewer to be dropped into the hospital yourself, you feel every decision and heartbreak, knowing every minute matters, you feel sort of responsible when watching.
Noah Wyle is the perfect leading actor in this series. Wyle is no stranger to playing a doctor, having played Dr. John Carter on “ER” for 11 years. He brings empathy and a steady hand amidst chaos in the emergency room, which many of the other doctors lack. The supporting cast also shines through in this series. From Katherine LaNassa to Shawn Hatosy (both of whom won Emmys for their respective roles), they bring a strong sense of humanity to the show. This show is not about being the best doctors in the world, but rather being simple human beings who do remarkable work to save the lives of other simple human beings.
The tone and visuals of “The Pitt” are often harsh and messy. This is reflective of the current state of emergency rooms in America, which are often crowded and noisy. The show does not shy away from the realities of medical issues in America currently. Showcasing understaffed hospitals, lack of funding, social inequalities, and difficult end-of-life decisions. These are not just background tropes in the show; they become core pieces of the narrative.
“The Pitt” balances its intensity with moments of quiet, emotional truth. You will find yourself holding your breath in crises and clutching your heart at tender moments of grief, regret, and compassion.
