Back in late August, the women’s volleyball team resumed its quest for greatness and began its attempt to complete a three-peat. The team has started the year with a dazzling 11-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of Babson on Sept. 19. The past two years have been filled with victory and celebration, but it’s clear that women’s volleyball has no intention of taking its foot off the pedal.
With an away record of 5-0, it’s clear the team has shown no signs of fear, even when it travels to other gyms. The past three games have all been won in three sets, and two of them were away games.
Despite some departures and arrivals, the team is still sharp – boasting a hitting percentage of .242, which is up from last year. Hitting percentage directly measures offensive efficiency. A high hitting percentage indicates the team’s unique level of control and shows that points for the opposition don’t come easily. Senior libero Madeline Caro stated that “we have a lot of key returners, but a lot of new faces as well.”
She also commented on the team’s mindset and how they “have built a championship culture.” This culture has remained firm, even with roster changes over the last few years. The majority of the women’s volleyball squad this year is made up of underclassmen. For most teams, winning becomes more and more difficult as you do it. For women’s volleyball, winning seems to have become routine.
During the GNAC run last year, the team was 9-3 after 12 games. This year’s squad has come out ready, with no signs of rust or a championship hangover. It will be hard to replicate the success they had last fall, but they are on pace to eclipse their previous record of 30-6.
The team currently has six fewer losses than anyone ahead of them in the GNAC rankings, and they would have the number 1 spot if it weren’t for fewer conference games played. Women’s volleyball is currently behind Regis, Saint Joseph’s (Maine), and Colby-Sawyer.
“Right now is about building chemistry and putting the right things together, but once it comes to game time with these next conference games, we’re positive that we’ll trust our training,” Caro added. The key for the women’s basketball team has been their tremendous ability to stay locked in and silence the outside noise. The team is on the same page and operates accordingly.
Another has been to believe in themselves. The team has performed well so far, and that brings a lot of confidence. The team focuses on each game individually, and they will only start thinking about the postseason when that comes. If the last few years are any indication, the team will continue to set new standards while also having fun on the court.
